It could be a real revolution for countries where the population does not have access to safe health facilities. It is the new toilet created thanks to the support of the Bill and Melinda Foundation. A very special toilet which does not require water or sewage and which transforms human waste into fertilizer.

Gates tweeted a video Monday describing his and the foundation's mission to improve sanitation in countries that don't have or can't afford to build sewer infrastructure.

The American philanthropist unveiled the futuristic bathroom in Beijing and to emphasize the importance of safe toilets, he brought a jar of feces with him during his speech:

"You could guess what's in this container, and you'd be right, human feces - this tiny amount of feces could contain up to 200 trillion rotavirus cells, 20 billion Shigella bacteria and 100.000 parasitic worm eggs," he said. Gates astonished the listeners.

And it really is. Poor sanitation kills nearly 500.000 children under the age of 5 and costs about $ 223 billion a year in the form of increased healthcare spending, lost productivity and wages.

Untreated wastewater can also have a negative impact on the environment.

"Some of the untreated human waste is in latrines that contaminate the groundwater around people's homes," Gates said in his speech. “Some are collected manually or by truck and dumped into nearby fields or waterways, others are collected in the sewers but never treated. The point is that we are far from the goal that the world set in 2015, which is that everyone in the world can have access to safe toilets ".

The toilet, according to what Gates confirmed, is ready for sale after years of development and is the result of research projects funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The toilet is currently being tested in Durban, South Africa. "Durban is a good place to perform these tests because the city is growing rapidly and many people do not have modern toilets, which means that even if they have access to a bathroom, waste can enter the environment and cause disease." Gates said in the video.

The next step for the project will be to present the concept to the producers.

These could be the toilets of the future, allowing us to save water and in the meantime reducing health risks in the poorest countries.
