La Veneto region has decided to coordinate and fully finance this study, which takes place in collaboration with theIstituto Superiore di Sanita. THE'water pollution emergency in Veneto it began in summer 2013. From that moment on, the possible urgent measures have been put in place.
Now we move on to a monitoring that takes place directly on people to verify their exposure to pollutants. Thus we speak of human biomonitoring. It is not certain that the presence of a pollutant has direct consequences on the health of citizens, but this could happen, therefore it is necessary to monitor their health conditions.
We will start by monitoring the inhabitants of the areas most polluted by PFAS. Citizens of some places where contamination did not occur will also be monitored, so as to have a term of comparison.
Citizens participating in the study will have to undergo the blood analysis expected. THE Municipalities concerned from the project are: Montecchio Maggiore, Lonigo, Brendola, Creazzo, Altavilla, Sovizzo, Sarego (for the impact area); Mozzecane, Dueville, Carmignano, Fontaniva, Loreggia, Resana, Treviso (for the control area).
On the occasion of the blood sampling, citizens will be informed about the project, they will sign the informed consent form and fill out a questionnaire which will be used to collect useful information to interpret the data.
Based on the results obtained in this first study, it will be possible to evaluate whether and how to proceed with any further investigations on other population samples in order to progressively guarantee surveillance and health protection.
