I little turtles by Luciana, the specimen of Caretta caretta that landed last summer on the beach of Baia Flavinia, Pesaro, are finally born and some of them have already been returned to the waters of the sea.

Luciana had laid her eggs on July 30: a extraordinary event since that of the Marche city is the northernmost Caretta caretta nest ever observed in Europe and probably in the world.

A exceptional nesting which at the moment represents an isolated case but which could indicate a change in the habits of the Caretta caretta in the upper Adriatic, probably due to the increase in temperatures.

“We have seen that the habits of Caretta caretta are changing for several years now, just think that in 2004 the presences in the Upper Adriatic were estimated at around 20-25.000, in 2014 they were already about 70.000, practically tripled in ten years. What we are seeing could be a colonization of the Upper Adriatic by these turtles, and the Pesaro nesting is one of the supporting elements ", explained Sandro Pari, president of Fondazione cetacea, an organization that deals with the protection and rehabilitation of marine animals.

From spawning the nest was guarded day and night by the managers of the Cetacea Foundation, as well as by numerous volunteers who have worked to prevent the den from being damaged or disturbed.

A history of solidarity which involved the entire population, including tourists, and which was followed with great participation even online thanks to the continuous updates of the Foundation on Social Networks.

Everything was going smoothly, when one last Thursday storm hit the city of Pesaro: the rough sea, the rain, the wind and a sharp drop in temperatures could have put the small turtles are in serious danger just on the days when it was expected to hatch.

On Thursday morning, therefore, the staff of the Cetacea Foundation intervened for prevent the nest from being damaged jeopardizing the survival of the young.

Foundation members and volunteers dug the sand, unearthed the nest and recovered several eggs still closed and about thirty baby turtles already born, which were immediately taken to a veterinary clinic in Riccione waiting to be released at sea.

Good news for scholars, but also for many ordinary people, who in this period have become passionate about history ...
