The International Feline Federation prohibits Russian cats from entering international competitions

Felines born and raised in Russian territory will no longer be able to take part in international competitions, after a decision that has caused much discussion

Faced with the repeated and violent attacks by the Russian military forces against the Ukrainian territories, the International Feline Federation (FIFe) also takes a hard stand, announcing the ban for all cats born and bred in Russia to participate in international cat competitions outside the borders of the country - at least until next 31 May. At the same time, the Federation also announced that it will allocate part of its budget to support cat breeders in Ukraine who are currently in danger of life.

The Executive Committee of the International Feline Federation (FIFe) is shocked and horrified that the army of the Russian Federation invaded the Republic of Ukraine and started a war. Facebook page of the Federation. - Many innocent people have died, many others are injured and hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are forced to flee their homes to save their lives. We can all witness the destruction and chaos caused by this unprecedented act of aggression. […] We hope for the sake of our Ukrainian friends that this terrible situation does not last much longer and we wish them much courage and good luck!

The Federation, founded more than 70 years ago, brings together about forty countries from all over the world under its aegis, including Russia and Ukraine. Each year it organizes more than 700 cat shows and competitions around the world, in which over 200.000 cats participate.

This ban is part of the myriad of sanctions and boycotts against Russia, triggered after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine nine days ago. We recall that Russian and Belarusian athletes have been excluded from sporting competitions of global significance, such as the Paralympics in Beijing or the next soccer world championships, which will take place in Qatar.

The tough stance of the FIFe has not failed to draw criticism and controversy - first and foremost from Russian cat breeders, who do not consider it right to be punished for a war not created by them.
