Incredible hatching in the Sorrento peninsula! At least 80 Caretta Caretta baby turtles were born on the beach of Meta di Sorrento.
In the Sorrento peninsula it is a big party! About 80 turtles were born on the beach of Meta di Sorrento, in that wonderful stretch of coast in the province of Naples. An extraordinary event that had not occurred in these parts for at least three decades.
The Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella and the Harbor Master's Office immediately intervened on the spot
“A few months ago - they say from the park - an adult Caretta Caretta was spotted on a nearby beach. She was looking for a place to nest in safety and tranquility. The site was monitored for days, even at night, to see if the turtle returned. But she has never been seen again ”.
And now, instead, one is celebrated hatching that is unbelievable, on a free beach not far away, with dozens of small Caretta Caretta that have suddenly sprung up and peeped out from under the sand.
Most of the approximately 80 babies made it to sea alone and will now swim to get out to sea. Some, however, bewildered by the lights and the presence of people, did not manage to get into the water. These were monitored and then delivered to the A. Dohrn zoological station. It is about 14 specimens now under observation.
“For over 10 years we have been working to protect this wonderful inhabitant of the seas - comments the Director of the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella, Antonino Miccio. We have saved about 160 in 12 years, establishing a fruitful collaboration relationship with the Dohrn Zoological Station. We would have preferred all the turtles to have reached the sea but unfortunately some needed assistance. Now, however, they are in good hands and will soon be put in the water where they can begin their life ”.
Turtles usually return to nest on the same beach where they were born, even after several years. It is therefore very easy that this mother turtle was born decades ago right on the beach of Meta di Sorrento. And that the babies will come back one day to nest.
