Off the coast of Newport Beach, California last weekend, a drone captured spectacular footage of a humpback whale spraying a rainbow from its blowhole.

It was made by Mark Girardeau, a nature and wildlife photographer based in Orange County, and his friend Royce Hutain, who drove the boat. The drone captured images of the whale hiding under the water first, then emerging to the surface, spraying water from its blowhole.

Suddenly the water particles pass through a beam of light and a perfect rainbow. The image remains momentarily in the air, before the spray passes completely through the beam of light, making the rainbow disappear. The video ends with the whale diving once more.

"It's not that rare to see, but the way it looks like it's coming from the blowhole and the angle makes it even more special," he said Hutain at The Huffington. “This is clearly a magical whale with special powers. We saw a lot of rainbows that day from the whales. It all depends on where you are watching the whales and where the sun is ".

Shooting is on July 5, about 2 miles off the coast. It will also be usual to see whales spray rainbows, but to us it seems like a truly magical sight. Have you ever seen it?
