With 92 votes in favor and 91 against, MEPs decided to include wolves among the huntable species also in the reserves since in recent years the populations of these predators have increased significantly and, with them, the danger for farmed animals has increased.
The cantons will be able to regulate the hunting of certain protected species after consultation with the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN).
Simonetta Sommaruga, Federal Councilor and Director of the Department of the Environment, had asked to exclude the wolf from huntable species as it is illogical to allow hunting wolves in areas intended for the protection of wildlife.
In fact, a pack of wolves covers a territory equal to 250 square km, that is more than double the area of the reserves, so there is no need for hunting wolves within protected areas.
The Swiss wolf group and other environmental associations have announced a collection of signatures for request a referendum against legislative revision and to make citizens decide what the fate of the wolves will be.
As differences still exist on this, the legislation will also be discussed in the conciliation conference.
