Seven packs of "10 elephants each" to shoot, The government of Botswana has launched a public auction through which, we are awarded the opportunity to kill elephants, which according to farmers, are dangerous and destroy crops.

Botswana has the largest population of elephants in the world, about 130 thousand, although in general up to a century ago, there were 12 million pachyderms in Africa, today instead just 400 thousand. But according to the government, there are still too many. So a public auction this afternoon at 15, in the capital Gaborone, will offer the possibility of shooting at the modest sum of 200 thousand chaff, just over 16 thousand euros.

Until last year, the hunting ban was in force, but the new president Mokgweetsi Masisi lifted it, mainly because he had focused his entire election campaign on helping farmers who complain about the presence of elephants. By lifting the hunting ban last May, Masisi has completely broken with the past and with his predecessor Ian Khama, who had garnered international praise for Botswana's wildlife conservation policies.

Farmers, Time reports, complain about the growing number of elephant accidents, sometimes destroying crops and trampling villagers. While the hunt will not significantly reduce the size of the elephant population, the government says the income from this hunt could benefit local communities.

According to Bloomberg, conservationists around the world opposed these killings, but the government still issued a quota of 272 elephants to kill in 2020 with transport of hunting trophies. This first auction, offers the hunt for 70 pachyderms, but others will follow. The hunting season will last from April to September and sees hunters arriving mainly from the United States.
