No tourists due to the lockdown and heavy rains, the perfect mix because in the beautiful pink lagoon of Torrevieja, Spain, the flamingos they reproduce for the first time in 37 years. The "merit", needless to say, was the forced quarantine which forced the cancellation of visits.

To signal the birth and breeding of more than 600 flamingo chicks it was the Generalitat Valenciana, which attributes the ideal conditions for the complex reproduction of these birds not only to the isolation, but also to the abundant winter rains and above all to the hatching of the shrimps - the main food of the flamingo.

And so, over the last few days, a thousand pairs of flamingos have been seen caring for their cubs at the midpoint of La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons. A show.

The location chosen by the flamingos to place the nests would also be unusual: it is the central point that divides the Torrevieja salt mine, popularly known as the pink lagoon, an area very far from the shores. Here the rains have generated a kind of islands that protect the nests from predators and human presence.

It was since 1983 that this species did not nest in the salt lagoon. The rains of April and May and, above all, the January Glory storm, as well as the lack of salt exploitation activities and almost no mining activities beyond maintenance work, have undoubtedly created ideal conditions.

In addition, the extraordinary supply of fresh water reduced the salinity, which helped the conditions for the reproduction of the brine shrimp, which does not normally survive in the waters of the Torrevieja lagoon. A veritable explosion of schools of pickled shrimp that have effectively ensured the sustenance of adults and their chicks without the need for birds to move to other areas.
