Green Hill: one step away from closure thanks to the regional bill. The first victory of a bigger war

Green Hill's days are truly numbered. Ban the breeding of dogs, cats and primates for scientific experimentation purposes throughout the region. This is the main objective of the Bill of the Lombardy Region, presented yesterday by the President Roberto Formigoni together with the Honorable Michela Brambilla, which would force the closure of the breeding-lager of beagle dogs destined for vivisection, which became famous for the shameful treatment and 'inadequate' of the animals held inside.

Green Hill's days are truly numbered. Prohibit the breeding of dogs, cats and primates for scientific experimentation throughout the region. This is the main objective of the Bill of the Lombardy Region, presented yesterday by the president Roberto Formigoni together with the Honorable Michela Brambilla, which would force the closure of the breeding-lager of beagle dogs destined for vivisection, which became famous for the shameful and 'inadequate' treatment of the animals held inside.

While the investigation into the mistreatment by the Brescia prosecutor's office, which in October 2011 opened an investigation into Green Hill after the complaint presented by theOipa, together with the legislative process to remove dogs, cats and monkeys from the list of animals intended for vivisection, Formigoni anticipates the national legislation, acknowledging the provisions of point c) ofart. 16 of the community law approved in recent days in the Chamber. In Article 1, the Bill prohibits, therefore, in Lombardy "the breeding of dogs and cats and non-human primates intended for experimentation" and in Article 2 "punishes offenders with adequate administrative sanctions (up to 150 thousand euro, 300 thousand in case of recidivism) ", which will be sent to the local health authorities responsible for the area.

For Formigoni ”this initiative is part of a package of rules already in force that we have approved in recent years''- together, for example, with the establishment ofRegional canine registry, to which they are already subscribed 860.000 dogs - "It is a strong signal for those who are committed to animal rights, aimed at reducing the number of primates used and their suffering, through the improvement of experimental techniques and the use of alternative methods," explained Brambilla.

For animal rights activists, however, the speech is much broader: if it is true that Green Hill should to have the days numbered, Victory will be sung only when the word vivisection no longer finds its place in laboratory practices. The National Animal Protection Authority, while expressing its appreciation and satisfaction for the presentation of the bill, reiterates that it is "strongly against the use of animals in experimentation; a method never validated that over the years has proved not only cruel, due to the terrible suffering inflicted on millions of sentient beings, but also useless for the purposes of medical research and harmful to human health. This is why we will do everything possible to free the animals from this atrocious practice ”.

The members of the citizen committee against Green hill, then, they say they are tired of the words of politicians: “we need facts”, explains Sara Gerevini of the Montichiari Committee against Green Hill: “it is very important - continues Gerevini - that the institutions are dealing with it. Perhaps they realized that thepublic opinion is on the side of the animals, and it's time to interpret it: let's wait and see, in Milan as in Rome. Cautiously optimistic ".

In short, even when Green Hill closes, we hope as soon as possible, the battle does not have to end. Meanwhile, the protest will continue. The next appointment is for Sunday February 12 at 15 pm, in Montichiari, for the “Imprisoniamo Green Hill” demonstration, when animal rights activists and citizens will symbolically imprison the concentration camp with a very long human chain that will surround the whole hill.
