Green Hill: the veterinarian and the employees of the breeding-lager acquitted on appeal

Green Hill case: in the end the veterinarian in charge of the controls and the employees of the Montechiari breeding-lager, in which hundreds of Beagles were vivisected, were acquitted on appeal.

The disappointment is great for those who trusted in justice for the thousands of Beagles who died and subjected to the brutality of the vivisection in the breeding Green hill of Montechiari (Brescia). The trial ended, in fact, with the acquittal on appeal of the ASL veterinarian in charge of the controls and of three employees of the biomedical company Marshall, accused of perjury. An astonishing sentence, given that the doctor who should have supervised the health of the animals is also acquitted.

Last summer the Supreme Court had ordered the annulment with referral to another section of the Brescia Court of Appeal for a new assessment of the appeal proposed by the prosecutor against the sentence of the Brescia gup had acquitted the defendants with full formula. A few days ago the new acquittal arrived, leaving the activists who mobilized for the release of dogs used as guinea pigs and subjected to unspeakable torture with a bad taste in their mouths.

The terrible story of the Green Hill Beagles

10 years have passed since the historic and exciting release of hundreds of Beagles who were held prisoner in the Montechiari breeding-lager, destined for the cruel fate of animal experimentation. Thanks to the extraordinary mobilization of LAV (Anti Vivisection League) and Legambiente activists, the plant was seized in 2012 and 2.639 dogs were rescued and then entrusted to associations and families who welcomed them with love.

In the Brescia plant, the Beagles were kept in inhumane conditions: locked up in tiny cages underground, without ever seeing the light of the sun; subjected to numerous physical abuse (with cutting of the nails such as to cause bleeding) and to the sensory deprivation. The females, on the other hand, were used as puppy production machines. In this infernal place the sick animal specimens were not adequately treated, indeed in many cases they were killed even for a simple dysentery; while other puppies have met their deaths for having ingested the sawdust used in the litter boxes.

Only thanks to a long judicial battle carried out with courage and determination by animal welfare associations, the Montechiari breeding was then condemned also in the Court of Appeal and Cassation and the lives of hundreds of Beagles were spared. Not all dogs, however, managed to survive. Several Beagles have become ill with tumors, especially of the liver and spleen, while others have shown behavioral problems following the numerous traumas they suffered.
