After a first case of African Swine Fever that hit a wild boar in the North West area of Rome, the Lazio Region issued an ordinance with regulatory measures for the containment of the disease

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Recently in Rome and more precisely in the North West area of the city, near the Insugherata reserve, there was a case of African swine fever (ASF) which hit a wild boar. From here the alert was triggered given that, as is well known, the viral disease that affects pigs and wild boars tends to spread quickly even if - we remember and emphasize - it is not dangerous for humans.

The situation required the intervention of the Lazio Region which issued an ordinance in which one is established "Red zone" where it is necessary to adopt some useful behaviors to counter the spread of the virus. This area, which is located within the Grande Raccordo Anulare, is bounded by the following points:

  • North - North West: A90 Grande Raccordo Anulare
  • East – South East: Fiume Tevere
  • South: Clodia ring road, via Cipro, via di San Tommaso D'Acquino, via Arturo Labriola, via Simone Simoni, via Pietro De Cristofaro, via Baldo Degli Ubaldi
  • South - West: via di Boccea

The area also includes portions of the Insugherata Park, the Veio Park, the Pineto Park and the Monte Mario Reserve.

In addition to the red zone, there is also a "warning zone" that extends throughout the territory of the ASL RM1 west of the Tiber river.

Active rules in the red zone

This is what the ordinance for the red zone provides:

  • passive surveillance strengthened by the management bodies of the parks and veterinary services
  • sampling carcasses and dying wild boars (which will be handled by the veterinary services)
  • carcass disposal according to maximum biosecurity procedures by the ASL and the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute
  • specific signs aimed at delimiting the areas affected by cases of swine fever
  • It is forbidden to feed, approach or disturb wild boars
  • it is forbidden to organize events and it is forbidden to gather (including picnics) outdoors in agricultural and natural areas
  • it is recommended to disinfect shoes when exiting agricultural and natural areas
  • fencing of waste bins so as to prevent access to wild boars
  • census of commercial and family farms that have pigs and updating of the National Database
  • checks on the presence of pigs held for non-commercial purposes (pet pigs)
  • virological control of all dead pigs and suspected cases

Active rules in the attention zone

Instead, these are the rules in the attention area:

  • active search for wild boar carcasses starting from the northern limits of the red zone
  • closure of the access gates to the red zone from the north side of the same (by the management bodies of the Parks)
  • census of commercial and family farms that have pigs and updating of the National Database
  • ban on feeding and approaching pigs and wild boars
  • ban on hunting activities within the GRA

The collaboration of everyone is also requested in reporting carcasses or dying wild boars to the toll-free number 803.555, active 24 hours a day.

NO to extraordinary abatement plans

Massimo Vitturi, responsible for LAV Wild Animals, remember that this situation must not become a pretext for hunters to carry out a massacre of wild boars:

We ask President Zingaretti that the case of swine fever detected in Rome does not become a pretext for a regional hunting deregulation, as happened in Piedmont where we challenged the regional ordinance to the TAR, the containment of African swine fever cannot be left in the hands of hunters and their personal interests.

Furthermore:

it is very urgent to review the wild boar control and management plans prepared by Roma Natura and approved by the Region, which led to the killing of a thousand wild boars in two years, deaths that have not contributed to any concrete result for the city and for the management of coexistence between humans and wild boars, in addition to the implementation of methods to combat swine fever that do not involve the killing of wild boars, including: active surveillance and sampling of deceased animals; the absolute prohibition of non-essential activities within the fenced areas with the presence of active circulation of the virus; the obligation of disinfection for those who leave these areas; the removal of any element that may be attractive to wild boars. It is necessary that these preventive measures are monitored and evaluated over time, to ensure a rational and not extemporaneous management of the problem, unlike what has happened so far.

At the moment, however, there is no killing even of the so-called pet pigs (pigs, wild boars or crossbreeds) which will still have to respect the established measures.

But, as stated in the ordinance, if necessary, the measures can be revised:

With subsequent measures, the measures will be updated and integrated according to the evolution of the epidemiological situation, as well as taking into account the indications received from the competent national and supranational institutions.
