The death of Nathan Labolani, the 19-year-old killed with a shotgun because he was mistaken for a prey by a hunter during a hunt, puts the spotlight again on the uselessness of hunting and the poor safety regulations. This is why hunting must be stopped immediately.

His name was Nathan and on Sunday morning he was walking quietly in the countryside with his dog, unaware of what would happen shortly thereafter. The 300 magnum rounds hit him in the abdomen because he, that big smiling boy, was mistaken for a boar to be killed.

Now the hunter, a 29-year-old from Ventimiglia is under investigation for manslaughter because despite the rescue attempts, Nathan died within minutes.

A scenario that is not so unusual, because we report incidents like this every year as soon as the hunting season begins. For some time now, environmentalists and animal activists have been asking for it to be suspended for reasons of public order.

In a note, the WWF asks “the Liguria Region to suspend hunting throughout the region as a sign of mourning. A young life was cut short due to an activity that today no longer has a reason to exist ”.

Lipu, on the other hand, requests the postponement of the hunting season “at least to the first of October, to prevent hunters from shooting in the woods in a month, September, which is particularly popular with tourists, hikers and families. An increase in safety measures is also essential for hunting in general, starting with the increase in the shooting distance from homes, given the great disturbance and risks involved and given the growing protest of citizens ".

“By now - writes the Enpa - it is indisputable that in our country there is a safety emergency and that this emergency is linked to hunting. The death of the 19-year-old, to the family of which we express our solidarity, is only the tip of the iceberg of a practice that every year causes millions of animal victims and dozens of human victims, even among the hunters themselves. The situation is now out of control ”.

We say NO to hunting

The point, however, is that there are many good reasons to say no to hunting, starting from the fact that today it is no longer ethically acceptable to kill for fun. Not to mention that an environmental crisis is underway: devastated habitats, soil consumption, loss of biodiversity also due to hunting.

Hunting involves a devastating biological disturbance on all species, even those that are not the subject of shooting, as it disrupts the normal rhythms of life, including the possibility of searching for food. A single shot from a rifle can frighten all animals for a range of hundreds of meters. But not only that, the lead from the cartridges poisons
the environment and animals.

Raptors, such as eagles and vultures, are the victims of lead poisoning. Feeding on the carcasses of injured or dead animals, they also ingest small pieces of lead due to hunting which can cause poisoning and death.

Let us also remember that the word 'sport' cannot and must not be associated with 'hunting'. Hunting is a violent and firearm activity that has nothing to do with sport. What fun is there in killing animals that die after being injured after several hours of suffering? Not to mention that when you shoot you are not even sure if you are shooting a pregnant female or a new mother (not that in the other cases it is less serious).

And finally, needless to say, hunting as the case of Nathan demonstrates represents a danger to people, especially when it leads to poaching. But this is not the case, because here we are talking about hunting, in fact the 29-year-old regularly held the rifle and was participating in a wild boar hunt.
