In his life he had killed many animals: leopards, antelopes, lions and every time, he posed triumphantly and smiling, next to the body of the victim on duty. Now it was he who got the worst of it, Teunis Botha, South African professional hunter.

Fifty-one years old, famous for his safaris in the Hwange park and for having collected trophies and ivory tusks, Botha was thrown to the ground and crushed by an elephant. It happened last Friday in Zimbabwe, but only a couple of today have the African media given feedback on the news.

According to the reconstruction of the witnesses, Botha was leading a group in a duly authorized joke at the Good Luck Farm, near Hwange National Park, when he encountered a herd of elephants with their young.

Three pachyderms worried about thesafety of puppies they charged the hunters head-on, while a fourth surprised them by coming sideways. The elephant has grabbed Botha with her trunk and another hunter opened fire. Hit by the shot, the animal collapsed falling right on Botha. They are both dead.

The press talks about an accident and an accident bad luck hunting, rather it would be appropriate to speak of legitimate defense on the part of the elephant. No comment from ‘The Big Game Safaris’ Botha's society which displays gruesome images of fangs, leopard skin, crocodiles, lions, giraffes and many others on its website.

We recall that near this park, in 2015 the lion Cécil was also killed by the American dentist who is passionate about hunting, Walter Palmer.

Elephants are docile animals that, like all the others, know how to defend themselves if necessary, especially if they warn dangerous conditions for puppies and for the group in general. Each year poachers in search of ivory kill up to 33mila pachidermi.

The latest Great Elephant Census clearly states that they are at risk of extinction because between 2007 and 2014, their numbers decreased by 30%, or more than 140 individuals have disappeared. At the current rate they could reach their definitive end in just 9 years.

And even if Zimbabwe is one of the few African nations having a relatively stable population of savannah elephants, poaching and drought have reduced the state's ability to manage the pachyderm population.
