Orsi in Trentino. There is no peace for animals, which have ended up in the crosshairs of a new resolution of the Autonomous Province of Trento. According to the document, in some cases the killing of animals is foreseen, including mothers who defend their children, without even the opinion of Ispra. This means that the bears can be killed immediately upon the decision of the President of the Province.

The resolution signed by President Maurizio Fugatti was accompanied by a series of controversial guidelines for the management of bears in Trentino, designed to manage critical situations. They identify three types of actions: light, energetic (radio-collar and capture with subsequent movement) and, lastly, removal through killing.

The guidelines are the result of a comparison with Ispra, an institute that issued a substantial positive opinion on the latest version. It is therefore a further step towards the management of the bear population in Trentino, which in recent years has marked an important increase. With regard to the most controversial aspect, that is the management of the most problematic specimens, the guidelines establish the cases in which it will be possible, in extreme reason and following attitudes considered dangerous or harmful to humans, to order the killing of a bear. The analysis of these cases will take place in a manner consistent with the Pacobace criteria, which it envisages 18 attitudes with different degrees of danger. The Higher Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (Ispra) will also comment on the most problematic specimens, except in cases where there is an urgent need to intervene quickly to ensure public safety, a competence that will be in the hands of the president of the Autonomous Province of Trento.

According to the documents, possible actions include capture and permanent captivation (action J) or killing (action K) in these cases:

    • bear repeatedly reported in a residential center or in the immediate vicinity of homes permanently in use
    • bear causes repeated damage to assets for which the activation of prevention / deterrent measures is impracticable or ineffective
    • bear attacks (with physical contact) to defend their young, their prey or because they are provoked in some other way
    • bear intentionally follows people
    • bear tries to enter homes, even seasonally frequented
    • bear attacks (with physical contact) without being provoked

There would not even be a need to comment on these forecasts, which are obviously disproportionate, comments the president of OIPA, Massimo Comparotto. We certainly do not expect from President Fugatti an attitude of respect towards bears and biodiversity, given the events of which the Trentino bears have been victims in this last year. However, these guidelines launched by the council of him really appear as a ddeclaration of war and death against bears of its territory. We hope that the Autonomous Province of Trento will decide to launch serious preventive actions to allow a peaceful coexistence between large carnivores, residents and tourists so that these forecasts remain only on the paper of its resolution, provided that we do not have to go into this too. case in the courtrooms for the magistrates to evaluate their legitimacy.

Once again these animals risk not being protected, indeed, being persecuted for the mere fact of being in the presence of man.
