Everyone knows the monarch butterfly because it is the only insect capable of performing a very long journey: every winter, in fact, it flies from California to Mexico for almost 5 thousand kilometers.
The black and orange butterflies can live from 2 weeks to about 5 months, but unfortunately in their short life they are increasingly threatened both by atmospheric agents and by accidents of various kinds.
However, there are stories that have a happy ending, such as the one involving a monarch butterfly saved from certain death by Romy McCloskey, a costume designer and embroiderer. The woman found the insect with a broken wing and thought of setting up a real home operating room with the tools she normally uses for embroidery.
Tweezers, scissors, a hanger and much more.
“I am a professional costume designer and I know how to embroider by hand. To save the monarch butterfly I also used a toothpick, a cotton swab, talcum powder. The missing wing was taken from a dead butterfly in my garden a few hours earlier. I compared the parts, just like you do in a transplant and seeing them alike, I tried it all, ”says Romy McCloskey.
