In Rwanda in Nyungwe National Park, a team of researchers from Bat Conservation International has discovered a species thought to be extinct because it had not been sighted for over 40 years. We quickly realized that the bat we had caught was unusual and extraordinary. The features on the muzzle were too marked, almost comical from a certain point of view. Horseshoe bats are easily distinguished from other bats due to their characteristic horseshoe shape and the peculiar flaps of skin on the nose "

said BCI's Dr. Winifred Frick. Scholars photographed the bat, taking its measurements and comparing them with data provided by European museum archives to confirm the discovery and so it was. The animal was immediately released into the wild, after analysis and official confirmation: the horseshoe bat is no longer extinct!

The research project that BCI experts are carrying out in Rwanda began in 2013. After nine years, 23 different caves monitored at each point and thousands of audio recordings, the presence of Rhinolophus hilli was detected in eight cavities. Despite everything, its diffusion area remains very small, which is why Bat Conservation International together with the park bodies with which it collaborates, will do everything to protect its habitat and ensure the survival of the species.
