A very serious episode of poaching took place in the province of Lecco, unfortunately the latest in a long series. Last Saturday two tourists who were walking along a very popular path of the Grigna Regional Park came across a rare specimen of capogrosso owl ended up in a metal trap. The poor bird was visibly hurt and frightened. The two then immediately reported the affair to the voluntary guards of the LAC (League for the abolition of hunting).

The prompt signaling made it possible to save the life of this rare nocturnal bird of prey. The capogrosso owl (Aegolius funereusrientra) is one of the protected species at European level and lives in wooded areas, especially in the Alps.

To make this episode even more serious is the fact that it took place within a protected natural area of Lombardy. Poachers know no mercy, as the continuing attacks on wildlife show.

Hundreds of small protected birds, in addition to the numerous birds of prey shot, are victims of traps, nets and other hunting crimes every year - reports the LAC - This is the result of a reduced vigilance, very few agents of the Provincial Police deputies to the control and the military of the Carabinieri Forestali, with legislation that punishes crimes with fines, the amounts of which are fixed until 1992. The failure to implement the National Plan to combat poaching, approved in 2017 by the State-Regions Conference of the EU Commission, is still serious; Government, Minister of Ecological Transition and Regions are in hiding on compliance with the commitment to restore the staff of public hunting surveillance personnel. All this reinforces a feeling of impunity. For years, LAC has been asking for the implementation of this Plan and for finally the penalties to be updated and commensurate with the severity of the sentence.

If you notice poachers and hunters in protected areas, always report them! The animals will thank you.
