Trouble in sight for Nausicaà, the largest marine aquarium in Europe, located in Pas-de-Calais, France. In recent days one of the walls of the sardine tank has cracked due to causes still to be ascertained.

Already in the limelight due to Sea Shepherd's complaint of the death of some hammerhead sharks, the largest aquarium in Europe has a new problem. Cracks have been observed in the walls of a basin that houses hundreds of sardines, located in the newly built area inaugurated in 2018.

First in Europe and fourth in the world, the aquarium has a volume of over 10.000 m3 and is home to around 60.000 marine creatures.

The incident, which occurred on the night between Wednesday and Thursday, required the Nausicaà teams to empty the affected part of the aquarium.

The origin of these cracks is still unknown. For its part, the management of the facility has commissioned experts to try to understand its origin, while ensuring the opening of the center to the public.

Of concern is the fact that the matter used to make aquariums is considered very resistant.

That of the sardines has a sheet of methacrylate, a plastic known for its resistance which makes it an almost essential material for this type of structures. It stands out for its unusual cylindrical shape. It is impossible to say whether this specificity is at the origin of the cracks given that the tank containing 10.000 m3 of water exerts a thrust of 500 tons.

The Direction départementale de la protection des populations (DDPP) determined that after the accident it was better to carry out an inspection of all the other aquariums in Nausicaa, which is currently underway.

The sardine aquarium is part of the Deep Sea Voyage exhibition, housed in the newly constructed building. How to explain its failure one year after its opening?

"We immediately sent experts to understand the reasons for this incident", explains the National Center for the Sea, according to which the state of other aquariums must also be assessed.

Nausicaá assures that "the sardine aquarium had been checked the day before" the accident. Even more disturbing ...
