Mexico City wants to (finally) abolish bullfighting

The days of bullfighting in Mexico City may be numbered. The Mexican capital is considering abolishing this bloody tradition

Bullfighting is very popular at Mexico City, but finally this ancient and cruel tradition could be numbered. A few days ago the Congress of the Mexican capital ruled - with five votes in favor and four abstentions - in favor of closing the Monument of Mexico, the largest bullfighting arena in the world, which can accommodate over 40 spectators. Unfortunately, the battle for the protection of the bulls is not yet won. For the definitive ban it will be necessary to wait for the vote of the local government at the beginning of 2022.

The draft reform of the law on the protection of animals establishes "a ban on any type of show in which bulls, steers and calves are mistreated, tortured or killed".

At the moment there is great trepidation among environmental associations and parties that have long been fighting to defend the bulls. "We owe a debt to citizens and to people who disagree with bullfights" commented Commission President Jesús Sesma, a member of the Green Ecological Party, hoping that the decision taken in the capital "will be a trigger, what will do and that other congresses of the Republic will be able to eliminate bullfighting ”.

The new provision provides for hefty penalties of up to 5 million pesos (about 210.000 euros) for those who "organize, disseminate and perform bullfights or similar shows that involve animal abuse".

Currently in Mexico, the bullfighting tradition is prohibited in the states of Guerrero, Sonora, Coahuila and Quintana Roo, and in the municipalities of Veracruz, Michoacán, the State of Mexico and Nuevo León. Similar bans have already been introduced in Spain, the autonomous community of Catalonia and the Balearic Islands. However, other Mexican states, such as Hidalgo, Guanajuato or Zacatecas even consider the brutal bullfighting spectacle to be intangible cultural heritage and refuse to abolish this anachronistic and bloody tradition.
