“143 days of hunting on the open sea without anyone disturbing the whale hunters. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society dropped its weapons after 12 years: impossible to counter the high technology of the Japanese whalers. Forbidden for commercial purposes, Japan has found the trick of "scientific research" to continue whaling undisturbed. Together with him the United States, Canada, Norway, Iceland, St Vincen and the Grenadines, Fær Øer, Russia ”, writes Basta Delfinari on its Facebook page.

Let's clarify, why are we talking about whaling?

In 2014 the International Court of Justice in The Hague ruled veto on whaling, but Japan has found a trick to continue undisturbed: the country in the note "Government of Japan: finalized documents for New Scientific Whale Research Program in the Antarctic Ocean" published at the end of 2015, declares to hunt them for scientific purposes.

According to the Japanese, therefore, "in order to preserve Antarctic resources to allow their use and to understand the effects of climate change, it is scientifically imperative to carefully study the various aspects of the Antarctic marine ecosystem itself by considering its animals. and their dynamics through the collection and scientific analysis of data ".

And to do all this, for them, it is necessary to kill 333 of them every year, regardless of whether they are female or pregnant. A scene that has been repeated for some time, but despite the fact that the Japanese country has not yet collected a single scientific data that justifies this slaughter, the International Court of Justice is unable to prevent the massacre. Why is all to be established.

Japan has always defended itself by arguing that hunted species are not in danger of extinction and that whale meat is part of its culture and tradition: and it has continued to reiterate this despite the fact that the consumption of this product has drastically and steadily decreased over the last few years.

Whaling continues in Norway as well

Hunted whales do not have better luck in Norway, where 90% of harpooned whales are female and most of them are pregnant. This has long sparked the outrage of the conservation community, but despite years of appeals and petitions, the slaughter continues.

As we know, Norway is the leading country for whaling and in recent years it has killed more whaling than Iceland and Japan combined. It is no coincidence that in the northern European country there are products derived from whales, for example lines of cosmetics based on whale oil, including skin creams.

More beauty oils, supplements and products for beauty and health derived from captured whales. Norway has long rejected international criticism, but has a hard time finding a market for meat domestically. It manages to survive, however, because according to the International Fund for Animal Welfare, commercial hunting is financed by the government.

What can you do

Avaaz is asking the Norwegian government, the European Commission and the leaders of countries that allow the marketing of meat and products made from whales to say enough.
“As global citizens we are concerned, we appeal to the Norwegian government to end the slaughter of whales. Your signature could save thousands of whales and help stop whale hunting across Europe ”.
