Ha killed a little dog kicked. Today, 3 years after that terrible act, the man was sentenced to pay a fine of 20 thousand euros. The judges' verdict arrived, which inflicts only a financial penalty on the guilty party.

A story that began exactly three years ago, in May 2018, when a witness told and reported to the carabinieri of Piacenza that he had seen a man repeatedly kick the puppy, weighing just four and a half kilos, along the cycle path of via Penitenti, in the Farnesiana district, while he was taking her for a walk.

From there the investigations began that led the prosecutor to arrange an autopsy on the body of the animal, which was killed. The autopsy, carried out at the Zooprophylactic Institute of Gariga di Podenzano, revealed that Liù's death was attributable to one

hemorrhagic shock from hemothorax probably of a traumatic nature, compatible with kicks in the side.

Now the sentence has arrived. The man was found guilty (pursuant to Article 544 bis of the Criminal Code) and was sentenced to a fine of 20 euros for kicking Liù to death. In addition, the Single Court of Piacenza also ordered a compensation of 3 thousand euros against Oipa, which has filed a civil action, and the payment of legal costs of 3.400 euros.

These are the words of Massimo Comparotto, president of Oipa:

Crimes against animals are punished with penalties that are too small and no one ends up in prison, not even for the most serious cases: sanctions must be tightened, so that they are a real deterrent against their mistreatment. We ask the policy to speed up the reform also requested by the associations. A crackdown on animal crimes is needed through the bill under discussion in the Senate Justice Commission, which amends criminal and civil laws on animal protection. The phenomenon of animal maltreatment remains worrying: our zoophile guards continuously receive reports of maltreatment, especially for bad detention. It is time to adapt the legislation to the need for greater fairness and respect for those already recognized by the 2007 Lisbon Treaty as "sentient beings".
