Kostis - a specimen of male monk seal - was in fact found in 2018 by some residents and was loved and well-liked by the islanders and tourists. Monk seals are an endangered species in the Mediterranean and Kostis had effectively become there mascot of the island.
The island of Alonissos is one of the most important protected reserves in Europe and fishing is only allowed in specific areas. Kostis's life was therefore safe, or at least it should have been. Someone has it instead deliberately killed and now a mobilization is underway to find out who did it and why.
“Unfortunately, once again it is proved that human wickedness and stupidity have no limits! We were informed today that the young monk seal Kostis, who had become the mascot of Alonissos in recent months, was deliberately killed, ”said the Greek NGO Mom.
According to the NGO, Kostis was killed at close range.
"This news was greeted with great sorrow not only by the members of the NGO, who took care of Kostis for several months, but also by all the residents and visitors familiar with Alonissos who had the opportunity to admire Kostis up close. ”Added the spokespersons of the NGO.
The hope is that someone witnessed the killing of Kostis or can provide useful information to the authorities for find the culprits.
