50 minke whales were killed in a protected area of the Southern Ocean. To kill them, once again, is Japan, which continues to use the ploy of scientific research to hunt undisturbed.

A war bulletin that grows month by month and the data comes from the annual meeting of the International Commission for Whaling in Brazil, which Japan chairs. As we had explained some time, in 2014 the International Court of Justice in The Hague had vetoed whaling, but Japan found a trick to continue undisturbed: the country in the note "Government of Japan: finalized documents for New Scientific Whale Research Program in the Antarctic Ocean ”published in late 2015, claims to hunt them for scientific purposes.

According to the Japanese, "in order to preserve Antarctic resources to allow their use and to understand the effects of climate change, it is scientifically imperative to carefully study the various aspects of the Antarctic marine ecosystem itself by considering its animals and their dynamics through the collection and scientific analysis of data ".

333 are killed every year regardless of whether they are female or pregnant, but while the International Court of Justice fails to prevent the massacre, Japan claims whales are not in danger of extinction.

Quite different is the analysis of a document from the WWF IWC Scientific Committee showing that three Japanese ships killed dozens of whales in an area of the Ross Sea Marine Protected Area (MPA) between January and February 2018.

Here the fishing is limited to safeguard whales, seals and emperor penguins, however the controls are apparently only in retrospect, when the damage is already done.

“Thousands of other species are protected in this part of the Ross Sea, so it's shocking and absurd that whales aren't. The banner of the so-called 'hunt for science' must stop once and for all, ”said Rod Downie, WWF chief adviser.

To date, however, previous attempts to weaken the existing ban have failed. Same situation also in Norway and Iceland. The three nations have killed a total of 38.539 large whales since 1986.

What can you do

Avaaz is asking the Norwegian government, the European Commission and the leaders of countries that allow the marketing of meat and products made from whales to say enough.

“As global citizens we are concerned, we appeal to the Norwegian government to end the slaughter of whales. Your signature could save thousands of whales and help stop whale hunting across Europe ”.
