Juan Carrito will be captured and taken to a wildlife area (hopefully temporarily)

In any case, it is a species present only in this territory and which is estimated to have only about sixty individuals: losing even one would be a serious blow to the possibility of salvation from the extinction of the population.

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

Yesterday the note from ISPRA arrived which, responding to a formalized request of March 3 from the Maiella National Park and the Abruzzo Region together with the other bodies involved, gave the favorable opinion on the capture of the M20 Bear. This is the young bear, better known as Juan Carrito, who is one of the four of the famous Amarena litter and who has recently been spotted several times in Roccaraso and in the nearby areas. As far as we know, the capture should have already been attempted yesterday night, but it was not possible due to bad weather.

The bear, which had been radio-collared for some time, had already been captured last December and released in the mountains, but after a short time he had returned to frequent the ski resort. It was thus decided to capture one of the approx 60 Marsican brown bears remained in the world and to take it temporarily - according to the ISPRA opinion or in a wildlife area in Palena, where there are already three female bears of Euro-Asian origin. Although the management protocol provided for a new attempt of capture and release in another site, the competent bodies have decided to proceed with the capture and its allocation in the wildlife area due to adverse weather conditions that would not allow the release in the wild.

This stage, although temporary, certainly represents an alarm signal for all those who care about this species. Even in the awareness that the complexity of the situation could not have simple solutions, it remains to be asked whether everything was really done to avoid such a sad passage, they say from the WWF.

Surely the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise to have put in place a notable effort in recent months to follow Juan Carrito, in collaboration with institutions such as Maiella National Park, to avoid his capture: a big thank you goes to all the veterinarians, park guards, Carabinieri-foresters who have been involved in these months amidst so many difficulties. But otherwise the management and prevention activities that should have been carried out in the areas affected by the presence of the bear, starting from Roccaraso, were lacking.

In recent months we have seen deeply wrong behaviors that have done nothing but make Juan Carrito more and more confident. The lack of basic prevention measures such as anti-bear bins, the repeated abandonment of food in the street, the constant chasing the bear even with dogs following ... these are all behaviors that have been recommended to be avoided for years and that instead have been repeated for months without any sanctions.

At this point it must be ensured that this phase of detention is only temporary to then try, as established by the same protocol, a new release in kind as soon as possible. This requires that the detention period be short and as less conditioned by anthropogenic presence as possible.

Risking to lose a young Marsican bear, taking it away from its natural life to lock it up in a wildlife area due to lack of preventive actions by the competent bodies is a very serious act for the conservation of the species. What the animal rights activists wish then is that all the bodies involved start a timely check on what has been done, on what has not been done and on what will have to be done in the future to avoid such situations.
