    The story of Juan Carrito, the "greedy" bear, who had made headlines a few days ago for having broken into the Roccaraso pastry shop to eat biscuits and who is slow to hibernate, could probably have a bad ending. A presence that is beginning to be cumbersome for many, so much so that a capture and transfer order would have been taken for the sympathetic Juan Carrito, also in view of the full number of tourists for the upcoming holidays.





    And so, according to local newspapers, "recovery and translocation operations in an area more conforming to its nature" would have begun and a team of veterinarians, technicians from the Pnalm and Park rangers would have already prepared a tube trap, a specific trap for bears, consisting of a cylindrical metal tube, with a snap lid and an alarm mechanism inside which apples are left as bait.

    And yet - we add - it seems a coercive way of limiting his freedom. Is capturing and transferring it the only remedy? Is there a way to rather create a peaceful coexistence?

    There are continuous episodes of the Marsican bear in an inhabited town. For this reason, the Salviamo l'Orso association has decided to distribute flyers to explain the Good Coexistence Practices to protect the bear and ourselves, created together with the staff of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park, of the National Park of Maiella and the Carabinieri for Biodiversity.

    One of the most important precautions reported in the leaflet concerns the presence of food, since it is evident that the bear approaches inhabited places to eat. The association that tries to protect the survival of the Marsican brown bear explains:

    Do not leave any source of food (feed for other animals, food waste, etc.) outside homes and in accessible areas […]. Only in this way can we do good to Juan Carrito and hope that he can go into hibernation!
