Liberty and Indigo were released in the meadows of the Farm Sanctuary, a Californian association committed to the protection of farm animals.

In the aftermath of the emotional speech in defense of animal rights during the night of the Oscars, Joaquin Phoenix has returned to make headlines by saving the lives of a calf of a few days and its mother.

Il rescue it was completely random and not premeditated. A few days ago, in fact, the actor visited a slaughterhouse west of Los Angeles with the intention of discussing with the owner the breeding practices and killing of animals.

The owner of the slaughterhouse, Anthony Di Maria, confronted the Joker explaining that in his facility the animals are killed in a "human" way, dying in less than a minute without suffering. The actor pointed out that it is in any case a killing, however rapid.

Di Maria added that when a calf is born in its structure it is not separated from its mother and the two are not slaughtered. As proof of this statement, the man presented Liberty e Indigo, a cow and her two week old calf, separated from the rest of the herd, e has allowed Phoenix to take the two animals away with him.

The plaintiff then put in place the unscheduled save, loading the calf and its mother into a van.

Filming the confrontation between the two and the rescue of Liberty and Indigo were made on January 10 by Shaun Monson, director of Earthlings, a 2005 documentary narrated by Phoenix.

"I'll send you some pictures of the mother and the calf while they are free in the fields, ok?" The actor told Di Maria, thanking him.

Liberty and Indigo were later released in the meadows of the Farm Sanctuary, a Californian association that has been involved in the protection of farm animals since 1986.

“We should use love as a guiding principle. But we are so disconnected from nature that we go against it and destroy it, even committing crimes against animals, ”said Phoenix.
