China and the United States have entered into an official agreement for ban the ivory trade within its own borders. In Africa, elephant poaching practices are out of control and endanger the life of these animals.

To address the problem of poaching there is still a lot to do but in the meantime the two great powers have decided to oppose the ivory trade. Both countries hope that this agreement will serve above all to stop the smuggling of ivory into China.

The President Obama and the president Xi Jinping announced their decision to ban the ivory trade last week. Chinese citizens were waiting for such a move, as 95% of respondents to a recent poll said they wanted the government to impose this type of ban.

The White House also took a clear stance against wildlife trafficking, specifying restrictions on the importation of ivory as a hunting trophy and underlining greater efforts to promote better cooperation by law enforcement agencies.

Second Peter Knights, CEO of Wild Aid, a ban on the ivory trade is the biggest step that can be taken to counteract this activity. The legal ivory trade has always been used as a cover for the activities of poachers and smugglers.

Now we hope that the situation can finally improve and that more protection measures will be implemented for the African elephants.
