It is nicknamed Pig Island and is known throughout the world as a real paradise for pigs. But apparently the reality is quite different. Michelle Cehn, founder of World Of Vegan, was on the island and found out the truth.

We told you about Big Major Cay as an island where pigs live free and happy in the wild, basking on the white beach and swimming in crystal clear waters. Michelle Cehn spent her Honeymoon on the island and decided to let the world know what she saw.

Michelle said that the island is mostly populated by pigs suffer from hunger and which appear in poor condition, including marks and scratches on the head, dirt and ruined coat, probably due to excessive exposure to the sun.

At that moment she recalled that during a visit to Farm Sanctuary the staff had explained to her that during the summer it is necessary to protect the pigs with sunscreen because their skin is very sensitive and at risk of getting burned. Pig Island pigs suffer from sunburn caused by excessive exposure to the very strong Caribbean sun.

Pigs spend most of their time on the island's beach, because that's where they can find food. Did you think Pig Island was populated by dozens of pigs? Apparently not, since Michelle he counted just 20 or 25 in total, all pups, females or very young specimens.

This is because to avoid overpopulation of the island the pigs are killed, otherwise they would be too many, they could become aggressive and pose a danger to tourists, according to testimonies collected by Michelle. We thought that on this island pigs lived in freedom and were not exploited and, above all, Michelle had chosen this destination for her honeymoon because she hoped to find a real sanctuary for animals on the island.

The photos and videos of Pig Island that we find online depict the island as an idyllic place but unfortunately this is not the case, at least according to this testimony. Pig Island it is not a paradise for free pigs but a mere tourist attraction which takes advantage of the presence of these animals on the beach to attract travelers.

The island is not much different from an aquarium, a dolphinarium or a zoo. Local tour guides, Caribbean sea transport agencies and resorts they exploit the island to attract tourists who would pay anything to swim with the pigs and take a selfie.

There is no one on the island to take care of the pigs and their welfare and to bring them food on a regular basis. The only way to boycott tourist agencies who take advantage of the situation is not to visit Pig Island and choose as a destination the places where you really take care of the animals.
