    A colony of blue penguins (Eudyptula minor) has lived in this New Zealand location since the XNUMXs. These penguins have to cross the road every day to reach the sea in the morning and then in the evening to return to where they usually spend the night.

    The penguins they are very common on their routes and to save them from traffic it was now really necessary to build a tunnel. According to marine biologist Philippa Agnew, New Zealand penguins need more protection, with particular reference to the Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony.

    For this reason, with the aim of minimizing traffic congestion and making the crossing of penguins safer, Oamaru Harbory ​​has decided to make their life easier and safer thanks to a dedicated tunnel.

    Mayor Gary Kircher explained that the penguins themselves were creating a problem road congestion because of the motorists who tend to slow down and stop to admire the penguins and of course to avoid unpleasant accidents.

    Construction of the tunnel began in early September and now the penguins can cross the road with confidence avoiding traffic thanks to this passage designed specifically for them.

    Local companies donated the materials needed to build the tunnel, developed the project and made it all a sign of commitment to the community.

    The penguin tunnel has been open and operational since 3 November. The tunnel is equipped with lighting to help the penguins move and there are cameras to monitor the situation.
