More than 2 dairy cows are about to be slaughtered in Peru because farmers are no longer able to keep them

It would be a terrible fate for these poor animals and for the more than 100.000 Peruvians who would be left without work.

A tragedy within a tragedy: if it were to really happen, it would be a terrible fate for these animals and for the more than 100.000 Peruvians who would be left out of work

Over 2.000 cows are about to be slaughtered because small milk producers in Peru are no longer able to bear the costs for their maintenance, throttled by the doubling of feed prices on international markets and the reduction in their revenues due to the large industries that pay the their milk less and less.

What small farmers and milk producers are asking for is that their work be recognized economically. In fact, the large industries that monopolize the market pay a Peruvian 1 sol (about € 0,25) for a liter of milk, and then sell it for 3.10 soles (about € 0,70), which means that farmers earn only 32. % of the final product. Based on this, we naturally ask ourselves if this added value in the final price is nothing more than a real abuse.

"The big companies are in a dominant position compared to us small farmers since they impose their prices on us and pay us a sum for the fresh milk that leaves us sinking into bankruptcy," explained Clímaco Cárdenas, president of AGALEP, l association that brings together small milk producers

The current crisis in the sector, aggravated by the pandemic, will leave no less than 100.000 people unemployed after the absurd slaughter of these animals. Representatives of farmers across the country have already taken steps to avoid this terrible scenario and will write a "coherent and technical" petition, to be presented to the relevant organizations and ministries, to reassess their situation.
