There are elephants that were exploited in the circus, those injured by poachers, with disabilities and victims of malnutrition. In India in Uttar Pradesh, there is a very special veterinary center, the Wildlife SOS Elephant Hospital which treats pachyderms and when possible, gives them back their freedom.

Anyone who arrives at this special hospital is a victim of exploitation or mistreatment. The non-profit organization, Wildlife SOS, was founded in 1995 and has already rescued hundreds of animals.

The purpose of this center is to rehabilitate orphaned, injured, displaced or exploited animals that are treated here and set free. When this is not possible, as in the case of specimens grown inside a cage, the center offers suitable spaces in areas used as a sanctuary.

Tigers, bears and more

The center was already known for providing relief to tigers, bears and turtles, but since November 2018 there is more support offered to elephants. 26 pachyderms from tourist attractions such as circuses and temples. Most of the elephants are in poor physical condition due to years of neglect and malnutrition, this is why the hospital was specially designed for pachyderms with disabilities or very old age.

Holly gives 'means of transport' to the Shrine

Among those saved there is also Holly who until recently was used as a means of transport for tourists. The elephant was kidnapped from a private citizen who ran a tourism business. Holly is blind and her body was covered with chronic untreated abscesses, she was malnourished and with arthritis in her hind legs.

She is now receiving all possible medical treatment and once rehabilitated she will be moved to either the Mathura Elephant Conservation and Care Center or the Yamunanagar Elephant Rescue Center.
