In India monkeys on the run with Covid-19 test samples stolen from a laboratory technician

A group of monkeys attacked a lab technician carrying coronavirus test samples and stole the test tubes

They attacked a lab technician carrying coronavirus test samples, stole the test tubes, and fled. A full-blown theft, probably conducted by a group of monkeys also hungry due to the absence of tourists, who usually offer them something to eat.

It is also a bad period for the monkeys that in many Asian countries roam in search of something to eat. Tourists are few and even those who usually offer them food today do not do so for fear of infecting them. So they have to make do and that's probably what happened in India.

News so absurd that it doesn't even seem true but it really happened. According to the Times of India, the monkeys stormed a lab technician who was transporting test samples to patients at Meerut Medical College, India. Doctors had collected test samples from three people suspected of being infected with the coronavirus. However, before they could be examined, the monkeys literally snatched them from the lab technician's hands and ran away. Doctors took new samples from the patients.

A few hours later, one of the monkeys was found in a tree chewing on collection kits. Parts of some kits have also been spotted in the ground under the tree. The video of the incident went viral on social media. Meerut District Magistrate Anil Dhingra said he had not seen any videos but that he would start an investigation into the matter.

Hungry monkeys

Unfortunately, hunger is pushing these animals more and more to grab whatever they can find on the streets. It also happened in Thailand. Accustomed to being fed by thousands of tourists, wild monkeys have invaded the streets of the city of Lopburi in search of food.

Hordes of hungry monkeys invade the streets of Thailand left empty by tourists for the Coronavirus

The local population now fears a further spread of the infection not so much linked to the animals but to the dispersion of the samples, potentially abandoned by the animals in the nearby residential areas. For their part, monkeys are not immune to the coronavirus. There is also a risk of human transmission of the COVID-19 infection to monkeys.
