To prevent the illegal capture of decoy birds, the national law prohibits the use of decoys “which are not identifiable by an immovable ring” (art. 5 L. 157/1992). But from today in Lombardy it will no longer be allowed check the irremovability of the rings, as the new regional law establishes that the surveillance and control activity on the rings used for decoy birds must be carried out by verifying only the presence of the ring on the specimen.
“This very serious and illegitimate limitation is hypocritically justified by the need to respect the animal welfare (of animals which, we recall, live in tiny cages for all their lives) which would be compromised by the manipulation carried out by the control staff. Moreover, it will also be allowed to use rings made of plastic materials ”, continues the WWF.
A further very serious novelty, according to the association, consists in the possibility of marking the animal killed not immediately after killing on the card. but after the recovery of the animal itself. This would prevent the control staff from verifying how many animals have actually been killed and will favor those who intend to kill more animals than permitted by law.
All this in a Region where there is a very high level of illegality and poaching.
