Hundreds of decaying sharks found trapped in a 'ghost' web

A group of divers found hundreds of decaying sharks and other fish trapped in a ghost net in the Cayman Islands.

While intent on diving in the waters of the Cayman Islands, four divers, including 27-year-old fisherman, and dive instructor, Dominick Martin-Mayes, were faced with a gruesome sight: hundreds of decaying sharks and other fish tangled in a floating ghost net.

At first they believed it was a log, but as they approached they recognized the net, which apparently remained in the water for months, trapping everything that happened.

    Dominick told The Independent:

“First I jumped in the water and was shocked by what I saw. She blew me away - the first thing I saw was the young oceanic whitetip [shark]. "

The four divers went among the corpses to free them from that deadly trap, but unfortunately most of the animals were already dead, and the attempts proved in vain, also because they had to interrupt the rescue so as not to get entangled in turn.

According to Dominick, some fish were so decomposed that they were unrecognizable. Immediately after the macabre discovery, he informed the Department of the Environment to recover the network as soon as possible and the government of the Cayman Islands issued a warning to arrange for it to be removed.

According to the Cayman Compass, it is unclear whether this is involuntary loss or abandonment, as is often the case due to negligence, but luckily, according to the latest updates, fisherman Charles Ebanks towed her to Harbor House, where she is. recovered and taken to a landfill for disposal.

Unfortunately, fishing gear lost or abandoned at sea, such as so-called "ghost nets", represent a huge risk to marine life. The latter are able to move for kilometers dragged by currents and in this way kill many animals. Unfortunately, a very widespread phenomenon, as the WWF points out, according to which our oceans are full of them.
