In the summer, the scorching heat and heat put a strain on everything under the sun's blazing fury. It is not only us or our four-legged friends that literally go limp, but also plants, flowers and lawns that we have taken care of so much during the year. The solution to keep them alive and well in the true sense of the word is to give the right amount of water, but how to avoid wasting this precious resource at the same time?

In fact, the summer season is definitely that time of year when you will probably find yourself having to reorganize your "care program" of your green spaces. Watering, mowing or planting new flowers in the heat of the day must be done with particular care.

Every lawn or plant or flower has different needs, but there are some key considerations that you need to keep in mind when "planning" your green thumb activities. Depending on where you live, for example, there are best practices to ensure that all available greenery is healthy and protected in the best possible way.

Plant native herbs and plants that suit your climate

Know and use ours more native plants it is probably the best way to ensure that you have a healthy lawn or green space that you want. The seeds germinate best in the climates from which they originated. Native herbs are better able to withstand local temperatures and are also better suited to treating local weeds, pests and diseases.

For the lawn, consider more grass alternatives

If you live in a drought prone area or if the spring was particularly dry, consider planting annual and perennial herbs tolerant of excessively arid air. Drought-resistant plants will in fact be able to withstand even “brutal” summer temperatures without having to water with liters of water.

Almost all the plants coming from the Mediterranean environment and therefore "rustic" appreciate the sun, the soft and permeable earth. As well as plants such as thyme, lavender and oregano and grasses in general are plants that are well adapted to survive drought.

Rainwater and the "screwdriver test"

If you have the chance, collect rainwater to reuse it on the lawn and plants. The ideal would be to irrigate at the right depth and with the right time intervals: this is why you might consider investing in an inexpensive lawn moisture meter to determine if there is already too much water. An even easier way to test your lawn's moisture content is to string a screwdriver: after watering for 5 minutes, insert a screwdriver into the ground, make a sufficiently large hole and check the wetting depth. If the water wets the necessary 10-15 cm, then the irrigation has reached the necessary depth.

Water intelligently!

The lawn does not need to be watered every day, so avoid setting up an automatic sprinkler system. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and when rain is not expected, water at the appropriate time of day, which usually corresponds to between 4 and 10 in the morning. Avoid watering between 12pm and 18pm, as this is the hottest time of day when the water will evaporate much faster.

Reuse the dried leaves

Leaves and grass clippings actually serve as fantastic natural fertilizers for your lawn. Rake up fragments and leaves, shred and collect them for a useful and natural compost.

Fertilized organically

In most cases, the lawn will not need fertilization. Try to fertilize with organic alternatives or compost and completely avoid pesticides and herbicides. Here you will find 10 valid infusions to nourish your plants.
