A baby Sumatran elephant died after falling into a trap set by poachers in Indonesia and losing half of its trunk in an attempt to heal its wounds. Just a year old (and in danger of extinction) she had been left behind by her herd and her hunters immediately ambushed her.

The baby elephant was found alone and seriously injured in the Aceh Jaya district of northern Sumatra and handed over to the provincial department of conservation (Bksda). Conservation officials say they tried to save her life by amputating her trunk, but two days later she succumbed to an infection from her injuries.

We were unable to save her because the wound was serious and infected, says Agus Arianto, head of the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Agency.

We did our best to help her.

The Sumatran elephant is considered a critically endangered species due to the rapid rates of deforestation in its natural habitat in Borneo and Sumatra. Male elephants are particularly vulnerable to poachers due to their precious tusks, which are sold on the illegal ivory market.

The death of this baby elephant is the most recent in a series of poaching-related deaths. The latest "accident" occurred in July of this year, when an adult elephant was found decapitated with tusks torn out. A real horror.
