A beautiful, almost touching story. Naya, a female wolf from Germany has crossed half of Europe to reach Belgium. So far there would be nothing strange. But this is the first sighting of a wolf in the country in more than 100 years. These beautiful animals are returning to Belgium and are present for the first time in all countries of Europe.

Farmers in the Flemish region of Belgium became aware of Naya's presence after she had killed two sheep in the town of Meerhout. While breeders are unlikely to be enthusiastic about his adventurous spirit, his arrival is nonetheless an important event not only for Belgium but for a continent that has long been hunting wolves, almost bringing this animal to life. 'extinction.

With the sighting in Belgium, i wolves are officially returned to all the countries of Europe Mainland.

At the age of six months, Naya, who is now nearly two years old, received a collar with a tracking device from the Technical University of Dresden. However, she had never strayed from her herd, which lived in the Lübtheener Heide area, a region between Hamburg and Berlin, until last fall.

He has since embarked on a long journey across Europe, before crossing Holland and arriving in Belgium on January 3.

"He went through four or five natural parks in the Netherlands, but left them all after a day or two proving he was looking for something else", he said al Guardian Hugh Jansman, ricercatore della Wageningen University and research centre.

It has settled in a large area near the city of Leopoldsburg, about 25 km from the Dutch border. Data from Naya's transmitter suggests she traveled 30 to 70km per day, traversing swamps and forests while looking for a home to found her pack.

But Naya's arrival is just the latest sign of Europe's rapid repopulation. Last year, scientists found evidence that a wolf pack had settled in West Jutland in Denmark, the first in the country in 200 years.

"We are facing the migratory wave of wolves," said Jansman. “Agricultural areas are being abandoned by people, so the wolves are taking them back again. The countryside is abandoned by young people who move to the cities ”.
