Goodbye Raja, the tiger who never knew freedom died: first at the circus and then at the Pistoia zoo

Raja, a male tiger who had been a regular couple with Kamala for some time, was twenty years old at the zoological garden of Pistoia

He is about to end up run over, his mother saves him

First forced to perform in a circus and then "saved" by a zoo, but still far from its natural habitat. Raja, a male tiger who had been a constant couple with Kamala for some time, was twenty years old and died in his sleep of natural causes at the Zoological Gardens of Pistoia.

Raja had arrived at the zoo in 2009 after being harassed by the circus: the tiger had been trained to entertain spectators and after living in a cage on concrete, it was no longer needed for shows. Not being able to be reinserted in nature, she was hosted at the Pistoia zoo. A life, therefore, far from its natural habitat, always remembering that tigers are classified as endangered by the IUCN.

Raja was twenty years old and died in her sleep of natural causes. “A sudden death, difficult to write because, as you can imagine, not a tiger dies, but one of the animals that in recent years has told so much about itself to all of us on the staff and to you who came and met him. Her story was about recovery from a circus which was followed by rehabilitation at the Park and the conquest of spaces that she had never known. It was also a great love story with his Kamala: inseparable we often found them asleep together or enjoying long baths on warm afternoons. Today is a day of silence in the Park, there is one less roar ".

A story that leaves a bad taste in our mouth because it shows once again everything that animals are forced to live. In this case, Raja had a long life, but she never knew the beauty of freedom: the zoo saved her it's true, but if she had never made it to the circus, maybe the story would have been written differently. .
