GMO: 5 insect pest species immune to Monsanto corn

Have GMOs Failed? Five new insect species have become immune to the insecticidal proteins emitted by Monsanto's GMO crops of corn and cotton. Specifically, these are those genetically modified varieties in such a way as to release harmful substances for insects, called BT, due to Bacillus thuringiensis, the insecticide they produce.

    - GM have they failed? Five new species of insects have become immune to insecticidal proteins emitted by GM crops Monsanto di but and cotton. Specifically, these are those genetically modified varieties in such a way as to release substances harmful to insects, called BT, due to Bacillus thuringiensis, the insecticide they produce.

Thus collapses one of the main points used in defense of GMOs, according to which the cultivation of genetically modified varieties can allow farmers to avoid the use of pesticides. A'illusion beautiful and good, then? It seems so, at least from what emerged from one of the most recent research on the subject.

An increasing number of insects stand developing a real resistance to insecticidal substances produced by GM crops of corn and cotton. As a result, farmers find themselves forced to employ pesticides for their cultivation. From 2010 to today, 5 of the 13 major insect species considered pests have evolved manifesting this characteristic.

The research in question was published online on June 10 by the journal Nature Biotechnology and bears the title of “Insect resistance to BT crops: lessons from the first billion acres”. The experts analyzed results from 77 studies conducted on five continents, which reported data on insect resistance to BT crops.

A reduction ofeffectiveness of BT crops it was accompanied by a real enhancement of self-defense by insects. In 2005, only one in 13 species had been shown to be resistant to BT proteins. We have now reached 5 out of 13 insect species. The effectiveness of BT crops therefore appears to be highly threatened. They will therefore be the same insects that Monsanto wanted to destroy a defeat the multinational of GMOs?
