In the two pilot municipalities were collected over 2 thousand liters of used vegetable oil. The project dealt with raccept the vegetable oil used in cooking, for example as a frying oil, cooking oil, and oil for seasonings. Recoil was sent in 2011 and will continue in 2015 as well.
The main goal is to avoid the dispersion of used oil in the environment. It is indeed very important to remember that 1 liter of vegetable oil poured into the aquifer makes up to 1 million liters of water unsafe. For this reason Legambiente remember to never throw cooking oil in the sink, but to keep it and take it to one of the special collection centers.
For the past 12 months, Recoil has been testing and tracing the door-to-door collection of waste vegetable oil in 2 pilot municipalities, through the development of a special software. The project concerned the municipalities of Castell'Azzara, in the province of Grosseto, and of Adriano Irpino, in the province of Avellino.
Il outcome it was encouraging: the citizens of Castell'Azzara collected 816 liters of used vegetable oil, with a monthly average of 68 liters. Considering that the citizens involved were about 1.500, the average per capita of waste vegetable oil was 0,5 kg. In the same period, the inhabitants of Ariano Irpino collected 1.212 liters of used vegetable oil, with a monthly average of 101 liters. Here the citizens involved were about 5000 and the average of oil collected was about 0,2 kg per capita.
Life Recoil made it possible to collect a total of 12 liters of used vegetable oil in 2.028 monthly appointments, avoiding the emission of 122 kg of CO2 into the atmosphere equivalent. If not disposed of correctly, vegetable oil residues can cause damage to the environment, flora and fauna. In particular, if thrown into sewage they make the water purification process less effective.
“Thanks to this project” - he declared Stefano Ciafani, vice president of Legambiente - “we contribute to reducing oil spills in the sewers and, at the same time, we recover a useful resource for the production of renewable energy. Therefore it is essential to proceed with an information and awareness-raising activity that directly involves citizens and public administrations in the sustainable management of waste and, for this reason, we want to continue to promote further actions aimed at citizens so that the practice of door-to-door collection is spread. used vegetable oil ".
If spilled directly into waterways or into the sea, they create a veil on the surface that prevents the natural exchange of oxygen with the air, with serious consequences for ecosystems. So we always pay attention to do not throw the oil used in the kitchen down the sink.
