In a place where it is dark most of the day and the streets are almost never equipped with street lamps, these beasts blend into their surroundings making it difficult for car drivers to see them. But sprinkling a reflective coating on the furs and horns it is possible to have them illuminated by the headlights of oncoming cars, avoiding dangers both for them and for drivers and passengers.
The idea of equipping reindeer with reflective devices is nothing new for Scandinavia. We have been talking about it for years: as far back as 2010 around 2.000 reindeer were equipped with reflective yellow collars or small fluorescent tags applied to the horns. Especially since there, reindeer are raised and kept on farms just like cows in Europe and the United States.
Could it be that this "reflective" gimmick is not so much designed to help reindeer stay safe, but rather to to prevent farmers from losing their livestock? In all likelihood, the real incentive that leads to strive to save these animals is the business related to their breeding. On the other hand, there would be solutions to facilitate the crossing of reindeer, without resorting to catarinfregenti substances, such as bridges and flyovers for animals.
