India mourns one of the longest-lived and most prolific tigers in its recent history, who passed away on Saturday at the age of 17

The Pench National Park, a natural reserve of Madhya Pradesh (India) has announced the disappearance of the tiger Collarwali, who died last Saturday at almost 17 years of age. This is a very long life for an animal like the tiger, which usually does not exceed 12 years of age. According to what is learned from sources in the nature reserve, the tiger died of health problems related to old age.

Raised on the reserve and loved by everyone, Collarwali has given birth to as many as 29 puppies (4 of which died at birth) in eight litters over the course of her long life - including a record in which she gave birth to as many as 5 puppies (which is very rare. for a tiger) - for this she earned the appellation of venerable mother (Mataram).

She had also become a TV star, having starred in the BBC documentary "Spy in the Jungle," which followed the lives of four of her puppies over a two-year period. The long wave of the documentary had attracted many visitors to the park, all eager to get to know the tiger mother. Her existence was monitored by scientists through the use of a radio collar, which was installed on the tiger in 2008 - hence her name Collarwali, meaning the one who wears the collar.

She was born in 2005 to a tiger called Badimada (which in the local language means Great Mother) and since she was a child she lived in the prey area of the Pench Tiger Reserve, together with her parents. When these died, she imposed her hegemony over the whole area, becoming a fearsome point of reference for all the animals of the Indian reservation; because of her unusual size for a female, the other tigers were also afraid to confront her.

Now the whole of India mourns it, as if she had been everyone's mother, as a national heroine. Wreaths of flowers and incense were offered in tribute to the dead animal which, after the funeral ceremony, was cremated in a space of the reserve. The reserve's staff created a video obituary to remember its importance within the park and celebrate the contribution she left not only to the tiger population, but to the whole country.
