There is no peace for the wolves of the United States. In recent days, the governor ofIdaho signed a bill that gives the green light to the killing of 90% of the specimens living in the state. According to estimates, in Idaho there are about 1500 gray wolves, but with this new provision, only 150 could survive in a short time. The measure, approved by both the House and the Senate, aims to reduce the attacks of the species against livestock and wild species such as deer and moose.

As you can imagine, the new bill found full support from hunters and ranchers, while it was heavily criticized by environmental groups and even organizations that generally support hunting, such as the Idaho Department of Fish and Game The new law not only allows hundreds of wolves to be killed, but also expands hunting mode: these animals can be chased with snowmobiles, trapped, shot by helicopters. Hunters will be allowed to use night vision equipment. No mercy will be allowed even towards the puppies, who can be killed on private property.

The reactions of Idaho hunters and ranchers

"I think the new law is very effective," said Steve Alder of Idaho for Wildlife, a group that campaigns for the killing of wolves to increase the number of moose. "I think there will really only be 150 copies left."

Adler also said he was very pleased with the new hunting modes, particularly the use of night vision equipment, and recalled a camping trip when a wolf pack appeared in the darkness of the night. "If we could have used night vision, we could have killed a lot of wolves," Alder said.

Idaho ranchers share the same opinion, accusing wolves of endangering their livestock as well as wildlife.

The reactions of environmental associations

The new bill was harshly condemned by the environmentalist front and beyond.

"It is a great defeat for the gray wolf in the United States." commented Zoe Hanley of the Defenders of Wildlife group - For years Idaho wolves have been continually persecuted during the nation's most lax hunting and trapping seasons and this bill pushes the species to the brink of federal relocation. "

The Center for Biological Diversity also spoke on the matter, asking Interior Secretary Deb Haaland to cut Idaho millions of dollars for wildlife conservation and outdoor recreation opportunities.

"We are disappointed that Governor Little has signed such a cruel and poorly conceived bill," said Andrea Zaccardi, lawyer with the Center for Biological Diversity.

The legalized massacre in Idaho threatens to undo decades of efforts to preserve and grow the nation's gray wolf population.
