The "Floating Garden", literally floating garden, to see it resembles a tropical island in the aquarium. Conceived by the French designer Graindorge in collaboration with Anthony van den Bossche and the Duende Studio, it's a innovative water purification system which will make your aquarium unique. The lines are simple, the design is modern, yet it reproduces a small, perfectly self-sufficient ecosystem.

By exploiting natural processes, the water is continuously filtered, cleaned and poured into the aquarium for the benefit of the fish and without the need for maintenance. Plants need fertilizer to grow, but this can be provided by nitrate-rich fish manure. The plants clean the water and the fish produce the nutrients for the plants: nature works this way.

The "Floating Garden" purification process takes place in two stages ensuring the constant presence of pure water:

    1. Filtration: the water filters through a 5 cm thick river gravel bed. The suspended particles, trapped in the matrix, constitute the ideal environment for the development of the aerobic and anaerobic bacteria necessary to transform nitrogen into nitrates that can be assimilated by plants.

    1. Aquaponics: filtered water rich in nutrients is spilled on plants which absorb nitrates, completing their purification. The water flows by gravity into a first compartment where only plants that need a lot of water such as papyrus can be stored, and then into the second compartment where it is possible to place any variety of plants. An idea could be to plant aromatic herbs that we can also use in the kitchen such as thyme e marjoram.

The maintenance required is minimal because it is not necessary to periodically change the water, as for all aquariums, but only to occasionally add a little to compensate for evaporation. To remove algal deposits, simply wipe the glass with a sponge.

Ultimately this amazing aquarium it is a microcosm that reflects the same problems of man towards the ecosystem: in the finite space of its architecture, the main question that conditions the well-being of its inhabitants is the waste managementie, in this case, it is made perfectly optimal by the natural purification system.

For this the "Floating Garden" it is an innovative work particularly suitable for one Ecological house in harmony with nature. From next spring it will also be available to the general public; for additional information please contact the Duende Studio.
