As humans seek enlightenment on their way to nirvana, these cats have seen fit of take deep naps in the arms of Buddha statues, where they found a perfect and cozy place to relax.
But do felines do it because they have a "special" connection with Buddhism? Not really. In fact, many cats are observed to rest and sleep even on marble statues of Roman emperors or mythological figures who have no relationship with Buddha or Buddhism.
It would appear, therefore, that the statues themselves, regardless of their "belonging", exert a certain attraction for cats. Could they be attracted by the anthropomorphic forms of the statues? Maybe. They certainly have some advantages over the 'organic' model of flesh and blood, such as the fact that they never need to get up to go to the bathroom, inconveniencing the royal feline sleep.
Much more concretely, however, as Web Ecoist explains, it is probable that the behavior derives from the fact that large stone or metal statues heat up during the day and retain heat, while other surfaces tend to cool down. And cats, as we know, love to bask in very warm places.
