The longest-lived captive giant panda in the world has died. It was a female named Xinxing who in her 38 years and 4 months of life started a long lineage but, unfortunately, all made of pandas who will never know freedom.

Xinxing died on December 8 in China of multiple organ failure. She had been locked up in the Chongqing Zoo since she was only 1 year old. Here she has spent most of her life. She was born free in 1982 but her freedom was really a fleeting moment since already in 1983 she was locked up in the Chinese zoo where she spent 37 years and 6 months.

Here the "heroine mother", as she was nicknamed Xinxing, gave birth to 36 puppies and had 153 descendants who are in China but were also donated to other countries including the United States, Canada and Japan. This is one way China has to demonstrate friendship, a practice known as "panda diplomacy". Unfortunately, animals are always forced to spend a life in captivity, rather than free in their own habitat, at the expense.

As early as October, the elderly panda was lethargic and reluctant to eat. Breathing difficulties and other health problems had occurred. Although experts from the China Giant Panda Conservation and Research Center and the First Affiliated Hospital of Heavy Medicine intervened, there was nothing to be done.

However, his life was very long, considering that 38 years for a panda correspond to about 110 years for a human being.

The problem remains that this long life was spent almost entirely in a zoo ...
