From Banff National Park in Canada come the images of a rare specimen of white grizzly bear that had approached, along with another bear, a tourist area.

The very particular animal, nicknamed by the inhabitants of the area Nakoda, was spotted by a Rimrock Resort employee, Cara Clarkson, who was driving down the road in Banff National Park with her husband and children.

As the woman told the local newspaper St Albert today, at one point the family found themselves close to a white grizzly bear who, together with another brown specimen, had approached the area frequented by men in search of food. .

The woman, who would never stop to avoid disturbing the bears (encounters not so rare in the area), given the exceptionality of the situation which she defined as a "once in a lifetime opportunity", turned off the car engine to resume the 'animal.

And indeed the event was more unique than rare. As confirmed Mike Gibeau, considered one of North America's foremost grizzly bear experts, seeing a white grizzly bear is "extremely rare".

Based on his quick look at the video recording of the bears, Gibeau claimed that it is not an albino bear. The expert explained that this rare color in bears is caused by a recessive gene that makes their fur white.

The video of the rare white grizzly bear is making its way around the world.

Parks Canada said the bear was first spotted in 2018, but has only made headlines now, after the video was posted on social media.

Here is the same specimen in some photos taken in recent years.

Parks Canada did know that Nakoda is a three year old puppy and has a brown sibling. The two tend to spend their time together between Banff and Yoho National Parks.

Nakoda's unique white color is believed to be caused by a natural variation of the color phase, which Parks Canada said he had never seen in the Canadian Rockies before.
