A French couple buys what they thought was a Savannah cat and instead was a Sumatran tiger cub.

It happens to a French couple: they thought it was a Savannah and instead it was a Sumatran tiger. But that was enough to put seven people in custody for illegal animal trafficking.
It all happens in Le Havre, where two people bought what they thought was a cat two years ago, at the modest price of 6mila euros. Only a few weeks later they would have noticed the deception: it was not a Savannah cat but an Indonesian tiger.

It was then that they contacted the police and so for two years the investigators traced the whole chain of this animal trafficking point by point. A not very common case, according to the Le Havre prosecutor, yet possible despite the fact that the big cat is considered an endangered species with fewer than 400 specimens.

In Indonesia, anyone caught hunting tigers could face jail time and hefty fines. But, despite increased tiger conservation efforts, including strengthening law enforcement and anti-poaching activities, it remains a powerful underground market in Sumatra and other parts of Asia.
This week, investigators then took a total of nine people into custody, including the unfortunate couple, who were released after a few hours.
The Le Havre Public Prosecutor's Office is currently continuing its preliminary investigations, while the tiger, in good health, has been entrusted to the French Biodiversity Office and is currently being hospitalized in an appropriate facility.
