Cosmetic tests on animals: from today stop throughout Europe

Today, Monday 11 March, the total ban will come into force throughout the European Union, thanks to the European directive 2003/15 / EC, and all substances used to package creams, shampoos and perfumes must be strictly "cruelty free", not only finished products, but also raw materials. This is an epochal turning point, an important step forward, which will allow the lives of hundreds of thousands of living beings to be saved.

Stop animal testing for cosmetic products. Today, Monday 11 March, the total ban will come into force throughout the European Union, thanks to the European directive 2003/15 / EC: all substances used to package creams, shampoos and perfumes must be strictly "cruelty free", not only the finished products, but also the raw materials. This is an epochal turning point, an important step forward, which will allow the lives of hundreds of thousands of living beings to be saved.

After Israel and India, which have banned the sale and import of cosmetic and cleaning products made with animal tests, Europe is also making a big step forward. But it is only the first. Because this type of test only represents a very small percentage of all those conducted in animal experimentation and there are still millions of animals that will continue to be sacrificed for other types of experiments, especially in the medical-pharmaceutical sector. In short, it is good to celebrate the entry into force of this ban and the fact that it has not been postponed, as was feared, but the battle against vivisection has not yet been won.

“Vivisection, as declared by scientists, doctors and researchers, starting with the oncologist Umberto Veronesi, is a false science. Mice react to drugs differently than rats. Some drugs are harmful to some and harmless to others. Who do we look like, mice or rats? What validity can a experimentation done on a species other than ours? We use serious alternatives, starting with cell cultures, ”explains Edgar Meyer, president of Gaia Animali & Ambiente.

Enpa also reiterates that the struggle does not end here, indeed it continues for animals that are "sacrificed for other types of experiments, including medical ones, in the name of a model that - I remember - is not never been scientifically validated - comments the scientific director Ilaria Ferri-. And that it cannot be absolutely applicable to man, as demonstrated by both the numerous researchers who have contested its foundations, and the thousands of people who have lost and continue to lose their lives due to side effects of drugs". Drugs that, paradoxically, should have been safe precisely because they have been tested on animals. “Saying no to experimentation therefore means not only saving the lives of millions of living beings - adds Ferri - but favoring the true progress of medical science through the search for truly effective therapies for the health of patients“.

For Rossella Muroni, general manager of Legambiente, the environmental association protagonist together with the Lav of the battle to save the beagles destined for the experimentation of the Green Hill breeding, "the ban imposed in the European Union will mark an important page worldwide for the overcoming the many, too many, and often iNutil experiments done on the skin of animals: cosmetic companies will use other methods to test the various products, thus becoming an example for all sectors that continue, however, to use the instrument of experimentation inflicting terrible suffering on animals ".

But, Muroni also adds, “I still am too many animals in the world are uselessly used as guinea pigs laboratory, without thereby guaranteeing greater safety for health and the environment. We therefore hope that the ban imposed by the EU on cosmetic companies, a sector at the forefront of research without the use of animals, will also open a profound reflection in other countries, in other economic sectors and even more in the world of research ". Meanwhile, to celebrate this European milestone, this morning the Lav will organize a demonstration in Rome in Piazza del Pantheon, at 12.
